Let’s face it, it has been a wicked and crazy year for everyone and each person has faced many challenges every day from employment uncertainty, economic instability, illness, caring for loved ones and being forced to help their children navigate virtual learning from home. As athletes, it seemed every day another race cancelation announcement came, taking away the one thing that helps to provide sanity and stability to our crazy lives. We were crushed. We cried. We were frustrated. It is ok to feel all of this! We all have a right to be disappointed and to be sad, but now as we enter the fourth quarter of the year, it is time to move on and turn that frown upside down!
Now is the time to reset and rejuvenate your body, mind and spirit. If you trained continuously throughout the year, now is the perfect time to take a step back and mix up your training and workouts and focus on your weaknesses. If your races were canceled and you took the year to try new things (I took up gravel riding) and give your body time to recover, take a step back and re-evaluate your goals for 2021 and start building by getting back to the basics.
How do we finish STRONG?
First and foremost I suggest reflecting upon the year and writing your goals for 2021 down. Have a back up plan in place because there is still much uncertainty surrounding the events for 2021. Here are some tips for finishing the fourth quarter strong both mentally and physically:
- Write down your goals
- Define your WHY
- Take time to try new activities!
- Hit the weights!
- Spend more time in the pool! Do the drills! Work on your form!
- Take some yoga or barre classes!
- Meditate and stretch
- Focus on your nutrition by eating a balanced diet.
- Make rest a priority.
- Read a motivational book, something that will ignite your fire!
- Get back to the basics and do the things you enjoy!
- Get outside and enjoy nature via hiking, walking, or hitting the trails!
- Find a support network that will hold you accountable and surround yourself with people that will be willing to try new things with you!
